Sawn Timber

When it comes to buying Sawn Timber or Lumber, there is a wide variety of choices. From specie type to grain pattern and grades, selecting the type of lumber ultimately comes down to its application and there is a suitable timber product to match almost any application.

Noteworthy is that each timber has its own unique blend of mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties. Though similar, no two species are alike and for that reason, wood is an amazingly diverse and beautiful product.

Structural Timber

Structural Timber or lumber is generally used in construction for beams, columns (or posts), ties, beam-columns and frames, and trusses.

The Post and Beam Construction method is very popular building method that uitilizes structural or heavy lumber rather than dimensional lumber. Durability and strength define this type of construction that can withstand the most extreme conditions. Post and Beam buildings are often the only structures that remain standing, in the aftermath of natural disasters – a testimony of their well-crafted durability. Tropical Hardwoods fit the profile for this construction style. Its dense nature and natural resistance to insects, rot and decay combined with its strength and durability provide long life.

Post and beam construction style showcases the natural beauty or aesthetics of the timber, making it a focal point of the building’s visual profile. Larger sections also mean that less support is needed and offers the advantage of noticeably open interior spaces.

At VWL, we pride ourselves on supplying quality tropical hardwoods to meet your every construction need.

Dimensional Timber

Dimensional lumber is basically lumber that has been rough cut to pre-defined, standard sizes (width and depth) but not length. Dimensional Lumber is sawn, planed and sometimes dressed or smoothed for immediate application.  It is also known as S4S (Smooth four Sides) and is commonly used for building or remodeling projects.

Dimensional lumber is the most common type of lumber used for building because its consistent sizing allows builders to use it interchangeably throughout the home.
